Hague-Visby Rules
The following States have ratified or acceded to the 1968 Visby amendments to the Hague Rules:-—Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Ecuador, Singapore, Egypt, Sri Lanka, France, Sweden, GDR, Switzerland, Lebanon, Netherlands, Spain, Syria, Norway, Tonga and United Kingdom.
Hague-Visby Protocol
The following States have ratified the 1979 Protocol to the Hague-Visby Rules which substitutes SDRs for Gold Francs:—Spain, U.K., Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The 1979 Protocol thus came into force in the U.K. on 4th February
1984 by the Merchant Shipping Act 1981 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1983.
Hamburg Rules
The following States have ratified or acceded to the Hamburg Rules:—Egypt, Uganda, Tanzania, Tunisia, Barbados, Morocco, Romania, Chile and Lebanon. Twenty ratifications are required in order to bring the Rules into effect.
Limitation of Liability
The following States have ratified the 1976 Limitation Convention:—North Yemen, U.K., Liberia, France, Spain, Japan and Bahamas. There is some hope that the Convention will have a sufficient number of parties to be brought into force in 1984 and to come into effect in 1985 after the lapse of a period of 12 months provided by the Convention.
Multi-Modal Transport
The UNCTAD Convention on Multi-Modal Transport has been ratified by Mexico and Chile.
Salvage
The next meeting of the Legal Committee of IMO will take place from 10th-14th September 1984, and will be devoted to a study of the draft CMI Salvage Convention.
