What constitutes a crime of violence?

The Supreme Court has held, in a difficult case, that the First-tier Tribunal had been correct in upholding the decision of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority not to award compensation to a driver who had been seriously injured when a suicidal person ran onto a dual carriageway. As it was satisfied that no offence had been committed under the Offences against the Person Act 1861 s20, the tribunal did not need to consider whether there had been a “crime of violence” for the purposes of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme 2001.
