4.1 Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of The People’s Republic of China (“the PRC”). The unique nature of Hong Kong’s legal system arises from the fact that until 30 June 1997, Hong Kong was a colony of the United Kingdom. On 1 July 1997, sovereignty over Hong Kong was transferred to the PRC in accordance with the terms of the Sino-British Joint Declaration dated 19 December 1984.
