New York wrests control of ‘Tavern on the Green’ name UNITED STATES

New York City has won the right to the name of the Tavern on the Green restaurant after a judge ruled that its former owner falsely trademarked the moniker in 1981. The decision comes more than two months after the famous Central Park eatery was forced to close due to bankruptcy, prompting a bitter legal dispute between city authorities and descendants of restaurateur Warner LeRoy. The judge said that the late Warner LeRoy had ‘made deliberate misstatements and omissions’ including hiding the fact that the name had been used since 1934, long before he was licensed to run the Tavern on the Green in 1973.
