Calls and Club Funds

8.1 Perhaps the most distinctive feature of P&I Club insurance, and a feature central to the concept of mutuality, is the system of levying calls rather than charging premiums.1 On this subject, section 85(2) of the Marine Insurance Act 1906 states as follows: “The provisions of the Act relating to the premium do not apply to mutual insurance, but a guarantee, or such other arrangement as may be agreed upon, may be substituted for the premium.”
