The Formation of a Bareboat Charter

2.1 No special form is required for a bareboat charter. The normal rules of the English law of contract as to offer and acceptance, intention to create legal relations and consideration thus apply.1 However, judicial doubt has been expressed as to whether a bareboat charter can be constituted except by a document in writing. In the case of William Cory & Son Limited v. Dorman Long & Co Limited,2 Slesser LJ said as follows:
